The house

Somewhere between a garden and a guest house.

Eden Vreugd is a lovely guest house in Fochville, a farming town in Gauteng. The gate opens onto green lawns, palms and roses — and a house that has been quietly welcoming guests for years.

There are six comfortably furnished bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom and its own private entrance. Breakfast is served every morning in the dining room, and dinner is available on request.

A rock swimming pool and lapa make the most of hot summer days. The braai is ready for South African evenings, and the lush garden gives children room to play while the grown-ups linger.
